It seems as though every year there is a Hip-Hop producer that completely takes over radio. Well it seems as though the Producer of the Year has been elected and it is DJ Mustard. You can’t change your radio or visit a Hip-Hop bar or club without hearing the West Coast sounds of this guy.
It all started in 2011, when Mustard blazed the charts with Tyga’s “Rack City”. Ever since then, it has been a wrap. DJ Mustard went on to signing with Roc Nation management in 2012 and it seems as though he has produced almost every other Urban radio hit since then. Currently, his production can be heard on Trey Songz’s “Oh Na Na”, Ty Dolla $ign’s “Paranoid”, Kid Ink’s “Show Me”, Tinashe’s “2 On” and YG’s “My Hitta”. You know what the best part about it is? They all sound like the same exact track! It’s feeling like the Lil’ Jon era all over again, but this time we take a trip the Wild Wild West.
At first I was a little resilient towards the Mustard takeover, but you just can’t deny these club ready bangers. Jennifer Lopez recently joined in on the fun by teasing a collab with DJ Mustard and then dropped the track, “Girls” produced by the hot at the moment producer just a few days later. Someone on J. Lo’s team boasted that Jennifer was the first female singer to grace his production, but we have to fact check them and let them know that West Coast beauty is actually the first with her Schoolboy Q future smash “2 On”. Those two ladies won’t be the only though, because DJ Mustard already teased a collaboration with his Roc Nation label mate Rihanna. Hope y’all are ready for the year of Mustard, because it’s sounding like it will be a long one.
