It feels like it was just yesterday when my cool ass Middle school teacher Ms. Murphy was telling my class about a hot new rapper that was about to completely take over. Yes my Middle school Reading Teacher who happened to be a short cool as white lady. Who would’ve known that she would have been introducing my class to who would end up being one of my favorite artists ever, Kanye West.
Ten years ago on this very same day, Kanye released his debut album, The College Dropout via Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam. The album debuted at #2 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart selling over 441,000 in its first week. The album garnered much critical and physical success upon its release and to this day it is arguably one of Kanye’s best bodies of work.
I’ll always remember the day we went to pick up my mom from the Trenton Train Station after she spent a long day shopping in NYC. No matter where she went she always brought back something special for her sons. That day I received one of the best gifts ever, my very own copy of The College Dropout. Of course I couldn’t wait to playi t so I burst open the packaging and through the album into the car’s disc player. I skipped through track to track with the biggest cool aid smile on my face. Unfortunately or fortunately for everyone else in the car it was one song that I was stuck on it, “The New Workout Plan”. As a kid I loved songs that would make me dance. Fun tracks. I didn’t really want to think, I just wanted to have a good time. That was definitely the track for me.
Through the years I dug deeper through each track and I started relating to track after track and to this day “All Falls Down” and “Last Call” are two of my favorite songs ever. Can’t forget about the parents rapping along to “Jesus Walks” and just so happy that this young rapper from Chicago is on the radio making it cool to praise God. I can’t forget Kanye sweeping award shows taking home award after award and tearing up stage after stage with some of the craziest and most entertaining performances of the night. This album just brings back so many great memories and I just wanted to share a little bit of those memories. It’s nothing like good music that just brings you back to some of the greatest moments of your life. I thank Kanye West for continuing to provide the soundtrack to these daily movies. Happy 10th Anniversary The College Dropout!
